In the mid twentieth century, actions to remove wetlands from the dunes adjacent to southern Lake Michigan which included lands of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore were initiated. These actions resulted in thousands of acres of wetland being removed from northwest Indiana. Wetland provides numerous ecosystem services including habitat for rare plants, waterfowl and other life forms. Therefore, it is desired to restore historic wetland to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. STATEMENT OF JOINT OBJECTIVES/PROJECT MANAGEMENT PLAN Work efforts will focus on restoration and enhancement of approximately 300 acres. Objectives of the work effort are eradication of invasive species and establishment of native plant assemblages. RECIPIENT INVOLVEMENT The youth team will conduct habitat management activities associated with wetland restoration actions. Wetland restoration work will include plant propagation, plant installation, seed collection and site preparation. Site preparation work will include herbicide applications and the use of tools and operating equipment such as hand saws, loppers, pruners, sprayers, and brush cutters to remove undesirable plants. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE INVOLVEMENT Resource management team members conducting Great Marsh restoration will provide support in the form of provision of the necessary knowledge and tools necessary to accomplish the desired restoration tasks. For each restoration task and site location, a member of the resource management team will work with the youth team until the youth team has gain comfort and competence in task execution. All safety issues pertaining to wetland work and use of equipment in wetlands will be discussed in detail. Contact information and communications pertaining to site location in case of an accidental injury will be provided. Daily communications will take place with the youth team leader concerning work actions and needs.
