Wetland Restoration in PPJV Priority Areas of the Iowa Wetland Management District

USFWS and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IADNR) have a signed Memorandum of Understanding for the management of the Iowa Wetland Management District Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs). This agreement authorizes the Department to utilize funds to manage and restore wetland prairie habitats for the Service. These WPAs typically share borders with state wildlife properties and both agencies share similar, Prairie Pothole Joint Venture goals. This project will restore wetland basins critical for the life cycles of wetland dependent migratory bird species. Waterfowl Production Areas in the Iowa Wetland Management District are located in defined Prairie Pothole Joint Venture (PPJV) priority complexes. These complexes are made up of a combination of state and federally protected migratory bird habitat increasing the wildlife value. This project will provide the funds necessary to complete wetland restoration projects within the PPJV Priority Areas of the Iowa Wetland Management District. More specifically wetland basins will be restored in the Jemmerson Slough Wetland Complex, Dickinson County, Iowa and Jenkins WPA, Kiowa Marsh Wetland Complex, Sac County, Iowa. Substantial involvement on the part of the USFWS is anticipated for the successful completion of the activities to be funded. In particular, the USFWS will be responsible for the following:The Service and the Department will have substantial involvement in this project through technical planning, project over site, monitoring, evaluating, reporting and management.
