Strengthening Blood Transfusion Services in the Republic of Mozambique under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)

 

The purpose of this FOA in Mozambique is to continue to support the Ministry of Health of Mozambique to Strengthen Mozambique’s Blood Transfusion Service to fulfill its mission of providing safe and sufficient blood products for the population. This FOA will transition 10 years of PEPFAR engagement on Blood Safety activities to the government of Mozambique. Two main objectives are: Objective # 1: • Increase blood collection from voluntary non remunerated blood donation to meet country blood need Objective # 2: • Improve the quality of blood testing (infectious disease testing, blood typing and cross matching)

Servico Nacional de Sangue (SENASA) is the sole official government source in the Republic of Mozambique for providing blood services. It has also been the sole provider of blood transfusion services in the Republic of Mozambique since it was established. SENASA is an Agency of the Government of Mozambique (GOM) Ministry of Health. SENASA, the sole provider of blood transfusion services in the Republic of Mozambique, provides comprehensive blood transfusion services for the country. SENASA has its central office in the city of Maputo and has established centers in all 11 provinces of the country (including Maputo City). SENASA provides a full range of services, including recruitment and retention on non-remunerated donors, screening of blood for transfusion transmissible infections, such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C and syphilis. SENASA is actively involved in training clinicians and nurses in the proper use of blood and blood products.
