STD/HIV Disease Intervention Services Training Centers (DISTC)

The purpose of this FOA is to provide necessary training to strengthen the skills and capacity of Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) and other PS provider staff working in or with state/local health department STD/HIV prevention programs to deliver efficient and effective STD/HIV PS and other disease intervention activities. As the role of DIS and other PS provider staff of this PH workforce is expanding and changing, the knowledge and skill set needed to be effective has evolved and will be supported by this FOA. By the end of this five year project period the following primary outcomes will be achieved: •Increased access to relevant, quality training activities, decision tools, and resources for DIS and other PS provider staff performing PH disease intervention services; •Increased DIS and other PS provider staff knowledge, skills and capacity to perform efficient and effective STD/HIV disease intervention services; •Increased use of surveillance data to identify individuals for disease intervention services including PS and linkage to and retention in care; •Increased DIS/other PS provider staff workforce capacity through cross-training- for example between other infectious disease models (TB, viral hepatitis), partnerships and leveraging of resources; •Increased efficiency and effectiveness disease intervention services including PS, linkages to and retention in care and outbreak responsiveness; •Improved integration of STD/HIV PH and clinical preventive services in primary care through training in PH detailing. “Detailing” usually encompasses tailored, face-to-face education of providers with the goal of improving the provider’s clinical care. These outcomes in turn serve the larger goals of increasing access to and utilization of STD/HIV prevention services and health care, reducing STD/HIV transmission in the community and ultimately decreasing STD/HIV related morbidity and mortality and improved integration of STD/HIV services in primary care.
