The Arizona State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) has requested assistance for its management of the Arizona Site Stewards Program (ASSP). The ASSP provides protection to archaeological properties located on public lands at risk from vandalism, looting, deterioration, and development. This program, when active, has been funded annually by Reclamation since 1997. Within the Phoenix Area Office there are 184 archaeological properties located on Reclamation lands at Lake Pleasant Regional Park. The site stewards' presence provides a degree of protection to some of the at risk properties. The ASSP monitors approximately 10-15 sites per month for Reclamation, focusing on threatened and/or unique archaeological sites. The program also provides educational opportunities to the public and enables volunteers to participate in archaeology and cultural resource management programs. The objective is for Reclamation and the ASSP to enter into an agreement to provide funding and support justified under Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (Public Law 89-665, Oct. 15 1966: USC 470).
