GGNRA partnered with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, Pacific Leadership Institute, San Francisco State University (SFSU), and City College of San Francisco (CCSF) to establish a Student Opportunity Center and Academic Internship Program on both campuses. The goals are to better connect local students from ethnically diverse and lower socio-economically backgrounds to recreational, educational, volunteer and career opportunities in public lands management; develop a strong stewardship ethic; and for those participating in the Academic Internship portion, start on a pathway to federal employment. For 16 weeks, students spend 16-20 hours weekly in the divisions of Natural Resources, Interpretation, Maintenance, Cultural Resources, and programs such as Sustainability, or Inventory and Monitoring. Those students that show exceptional interest and promise during the spring will be offered extended positions into the summer. All interns will be given assistance in resume building and applying to NPS positions as well as jobs with other park partners. The GGNPC is uniquely qualified to participate in the planning and implementation of this program. As our non-profit support partner, the GGNPC frequently assists in planning and hosting park Volunteer programs similar to Academic Interns. GGNPC staff have extensive experience working with the GGNRA and are familiar with GGNRA VIP approaches, policies and procedures. In addition, GGNPC staff have already been heavily involved in the initial stages of this VIP program. By partnering with the GGNPC, GGNRA is provided with unique resources, including support from staff with knowledge of and experience with volunteer management and communications with the two colleges. This knowledge and experience base will allow this project to be completed efficiently and successfully.
