To conduct research and related activities that support USDAs strategy to reduce food loss and waste. These activities may include the development of educational materials; the conduct of workshops and courses; or the conduct of research on best practices with respect to food loss and waste reduction and food recovery.

The Office of the Chief Economist considers proposals received, evaluates the qualifications of the proposal with respect to the research issue, and, in consultation with the selected cooperator institution, establishes a funding level and the specific deliverables due at the conclusion of the agreement.

How are proposals selected?
Reviewal by professional economic and senior management staff at the Office of the Chief Economist including the USDA Food Loss and Waste Liaison for relevance of the proposed research topic to the Office of the Chief Economist's priorities, experience of the institution with respect to the research topic, cost effectiveness, and qualifications of key personnel.
How may assistance be used?
Funds can be used to conduct research that is in cooperation with the Office of the Chief Economist's in-house research and analysis programs and projects. Funds cannot be used for construction, renovation, real property purchases, and in most cases, equipment.
