Educating park neighbors and encouraging wildlife stewardship in an urban landscape

This project will create a community education program to inform park neighbors about local wildlife, to share information obtained through our research on the behavior of urban wildlife in the area, and convey information to the public about the effects that their personal or household activities can have on the environment. We will provide programs for park neighbors through HOA and community meetings and family weekend events. These programs will provide the community with alternatives for controlling rodents or other unwanted pests that do not rely on poisons, specifically anticoagulant rodenticides. Programs will also educate the community on how to prevent negative encounters with local wildlife and emphasize the beneficial role of these animals within our ecosystem. These educational programs will be designed to encourage communities to engage in environmentally-friendly practices and provide them with information on how to reduce wildlife conflicts and safely coexist with wildlife. The goal of the program will be to foster an attitude of stewardship for wildlife, natural habitat, and parkland throughout SMMNRA. Mountains Restoration Trust will hire the education coordinator to oversee this project. This coordinator will work closely with NPS staff to develop and administer programs.
