Division of Biological Services

There is no "Full Announcement" associated with this notice. This is a NOTICE OF INTENT TO AWARD a cooperative agreement with the Universiy of Arizona , in the amount of $47,884.00, in accordance with 505 DM 2.14 (B4). See attached Justification. The ability of FWS Refuges to inventory and monitor (I&M) mammals is an important component of their I&M program. Such metrics gained from camera traps to I&M mammals (and potentially birds and reptiles) include presence, occupancy, activity patterns, species richness and accumulation, and MacKinnon Indices (for abundance). A primary goal is to detect significant changes in the state of medium and large-sized vertebrates. Also, Refuges have supplied water to desert wildlife for decades, without a clear understanding of how species use these waters. Like most wildlife management actions, there are probably locations where the activity is better suited than others, and timing of year should be important. For this project the focus is mountain lions. This project will enable understanding how mountain lions behavior changes with and without water provision. This agreement has a benefit to the public because the mountain lions in the USA are the most endangered mammal. It was registered as an endangered species on June 4th, 1973.
