Cooperative Ecosystem Studes Unit, Colorado Plateau CESU

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Western Geographic Science Center (WGSC) is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research to support refinement of multi-temporal climate and vegetation monitoring techniques in the Sierra Nevada and Great Basin ecoregions. Long-term monitoring of intra-and-inter season vegetation is being conducted with MODIS and Landsat imagery by the U.S. Geological Survey, and project partners are focused on daily-to-monthly climate monitoring using PRISM, DAYMET, and NLDAS data. Linking monitoring efforts to establish relationships between vegetation and climate helps develop a better understanding of climatic forces and impacts, which may in turn, facilitate management of sensitive land cover types. Recent advances in raster processing, such as those provided in the Google Earth Engine environment, have the potential to increase the spatial and temporal extent of the study, enabling PIs to more efficiently evaluate climate-vegetation interrelationships across a greater geographic extent and over a longer period of time.
