The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) works cooperatively with the American Hiking Society (AHS) to promote the AHSs signature national event, National Trails Day (NTD), which happens the first Saturday of June. NTD is a major means for the FWS to accomplish its Americas Great Outdoors (AGO) and Lets Move Outside (LMO) initiatives goals, and provide wildlife dependent recreation to the general public. Therefore, it has a need to meet its commitment to facilitate the planning, outreach, events, and reporting of NTD activities in Fiscal Years 2013 and 2014. In order to promote volunteer trail construction and maintenance opportunities on units of the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) as part of the FWSs Conserving the Future goals, and its AGO and LMO and to educate its staff and nonprofit support groups on the value of trails to the NWRS mission, and provide service opportunities on Federal lands to the interested general public, the FWS takes part in the Volunteer Vacations trail maintenance program which was created by AHS to meet the needs of Federal Land Management Agencies and is managed and promoted by AHS through the FLMAs, and FWS is one of the partner agencies that participates.
