BLM OR/WA Swanson Lakes Wildlife Area Wildlife Habitat Management, Spokane District

The Swanson Lakes Wildlife Area (20,065 acres) was established in 1993 for the purpose of protecting and managing sharp-tailed grouse and other shrub-steppe obligates, and shrub-steppe habitat on the Columbia Plateau. It is adjacent to nearly 30,000 acres of BLM land that was also acquired in the 1990's, which has provided the opportunity to secure connectivity of habitats among the two agencies' lands. Federal and State ownership of these roughly 50,000 acres of shrub-steppe, allowed for implementation of a coordinated management strategy that could be implemented throughout the watershed. It is anticipated that much of this work will include habitat restoration, fire prevention, weed control, wildlife population management and communication of such practices with diverse stakeholders and outside agencies.
