Attwater?s Prairie Chicken Breeding Facility

The AttwaterÂ’s prairie chicken (APC) is a critically endangered grouse found in the coastal prairie of Texas. Currently, fewer than 50 birds exist at three locations. Efforts to propagate and release APCs into the wild have been ongoing since 1992 and 1996, respectively. In an effort to attain the goals established in the APC Recovery Plan (2010), captive breeding needs to be increased to provide more birds for release. This new, dedicated facility will increase the number of APCs raised in captivity, thus providing more birds for release annually.
