ASGM Community-Driven Remediation Planning Competition

The United States Department of State, Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs (WHA) announces a Request for Applications (RFA) to support a community-driven remediation planning project for Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) in Peru with up to $990,099 in FY 2013 Economic Support Funds for a project period not to exceed 3 years. Proposals, and corresponding detailed budgets, must not exceed $990,099 in order to pass the technical eligibility review stage. The anticipated start date for this activity is September 2014 and one award is anticipated as a result of this RFA. This funding is only available for assistance in Peru. Proposals including other countries will be deemed technically ineligible. This project will provide the Government of Peru with technical assistance to collaboratively develop remediation plans for 2-3 ASGM-impacted sites that address site-specific ecological and local community needs. The project must include one demonstration project that results in the implementation of remediation planning in coordination with the relevant Peruvian government institutions and local community. The remediation planning must include strategies for alternative livelihoods for local communities in the affected area, which should be developed through thorough engagement with each affected community to reduce the potential for future conflict. Applicants must include educational workshops and trainings on the health effects of mercury contamination during the remediation planning stage for each community.
