Advancing National Public Health Institutes Globally

 

Through this cooperative agreement CDC will be able to leverage resources and investments in a country aligned with the Ministry of HealthÂ’s stated direction for developing a NPHI. Drawing upon the experience and expertise of the members of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes and CDC, countries will be better capacitated to identify and respond to health threats. The awardee will work collaboratively with CDC and the MOH to achieve desired outcomes. The desired near term outcomes are specific for the development of NPHIs. Overall, the outcomes aim to strengthen the public health system and strive for: o Improved quality of training specialists in disease detection and response o Improved outbreak detection and response, including emergency preparedness and response o Enhanced monitoring for health risks, health status, and the safety and quality of health care services (e.g., improved surveillance, surveys, vital registration) o Coordinated communication with public health workers, health care professionals, and the public about emerging health threats o Evidence-based guidelines for public health or clinical management of leading health problems o Improved management and oversight of specific disease control programs (e.g., TB, HIV, immunization, NCDs)

The International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI) is the only global alliance of public health leaders and partners dedicated to promoting the work and development of national public health institutes (NPHIs). It was created to assist low-resource countries in developing or strengthening NPHIs, and to build an international community of NPHI directors that could share knowledge and be international advocates for public health systems strengthening and investment. The IANPHI network has 86 member institutes from 77 countries, benefiting more than 75 per cent of the worldÂ’s population. In addition, IANPHI is the only global organization that strengthens NPHIs using an evidence-based international framework for NPHI development.
